The Sodastream Penguin soda charger is an easy and economical way to create carbonated sparkling water for homemade sodas, drinks, and cocktails. The Penguin unit is sleek, simple to use, and requires no batteries or electricity. These features make it the perfect machine for not only home use, but also outdoor barbeques, parties or while traveling. Enjoy saving money and creating fresh beverages with this machine. You can choose the amount of carbonation for each bottle, then add your fruit juices or garnishes, or use the ready-made drink flavors offered by SodaStream.

The unit itself has a cool design that looks great on the countertop, but at 18 inches high, it is small enough to tuck away into a cabinet easily. The Penguin comes with two dishwasher-safe glass carafes, reducing the use of plastic, which is good for the environment. The stoppers are specially designed to retain the fizz. Extra carafes, stoppers, and cartridges can be purchased allowing you can keep several varieties of drinks on hand at all times. The food-grade CO2 carbonator cartridge is easy to install and change out. You must use the Alco2Jet CO2 replacements for the unit to run correctly and safely. Refills

The SodaStream Penguin uses 60L SodaStream carbonators that, as their name implies, allow for carbonation of roughly 60L of water (most users do however report around the 50L range). Empty carbonators can be exchanged for full ones at various retailers such as select Bed Bath & Beyond, Costco, Target, etc. To find a retailer close to you.. Every exchange costs $14.99 but there are cheaper, DIY options.

Our Review

The SodaStream Penguin differentiates itself through its incredibly unique appearance, its design and the fact that it uses dishwasher safe glass carafes instead of plastic carbonating bottles. It is also a good quality machine even though it is quite expensive.

It is amazing how it takes just moments to create sparkling water. The amount of time and money saved by so easily creating carbonated beverages anywhere makes the Sodastream Penguin well worth the cost. Not having even to use electricity is an added bonus. It is fun to use, is made with quality components, and will last for years. The glass carafes make the drinks taste clean and delicious. The SodaStream Penguin would make a fantastic gift for those who love to entertain.

Consumers did however mention that the small size of the glass carafes was an issue and that it was harder to use than the SodaStream crystal.

5 Thoughts on “SodaStream Penguin Review”

  • We love the Sodastream Penguin!

    Regarding the bad reviews here:
” jaja99″ is hating on the whole system, not the Penguin. “it is what it is” and the penguin is the best of the best for sodastream.

    “Patrick Campbell”
Worries about the durability of the glass carafes and the penguin. They will break and we have dropped and broken a few but they are cheap to replace.

Regarding the penguin durability, we’ve had ours for over 10 years producing thousands of liters of soda and it has yet to fail us (Knock on wood)!

  • If you are like me, among those who dislike HFCS and love to change carbon dioxide content and economical that heading to the stores to buy sodas, not unless there is a major SALE or discounts.

Two significant problems though: firstly, the glass segment looks vulnerable and could break easily under mild impact. So, I fear to break it primarily because the part of closing refuses to engage. Moreover, sometimes the bottle compression refuses to work. With time, they tend to become weak and fail to hold the glass accordingly.

  • I love the look of the Penguin SodaStream soda maker, just like the physical shape of a penguin. Even though the machine works perfectly, it has a waggish appearance in its form. This is a machine you buy and put it an open space for everyone to see, and not inside your cabinet.

When you take a look at the glass carafes, you will agree that the manufacturer paid close attention to this particular product. Moreover, the water tastes heavenly once it is out of the glass. In fact, it tastes like seltzer, especially with all the fizziness. I bought the flavored sachets to create soda too. All in all, I do vouch for this product for its quality, functionality, and beauty.

  • Saying I am excited about this product is an understatement. This must be the wisest purchase decision I have ever made. I love carbonated water. I used to take up to a liter in a day, purchasing a lot of Perrier, carrying, and throwing away uncountable glass bottles.

Well, I am not past all that. The Penguin soda maker is a reliable device that is capable of carbonating a full bottle of water in a matter of seconds.

Here some pros and cons I analyzed from using this device:
    Pros
    • The glass carafes are incredible
    • The design of the device looks cool and will appeal on any counter
    • Faster and easy to operate. I am able to charge single bottle water in less than ten seconds

    Cons
    • Penguin is quite expensive. But as for me, it is a worthy investment, primarily due to the glass carafes and the stylish design of the device.

SodaStream CO2 cans are known to be very expensive. Just like other SodaStream products, you have to purchase the cans from SodaStream because they come with a proprietary valve. My girlfriend and I use an entire carbon tank in a month.

However, they are selling at $18 at the local store. Before you purchase this unit, consider visiting the official website of SodaStream and see if there are nearby shops that exchange or sell the tanks.

You can also purchase third party attachments online that will enable you to use more affordable CO2 tanks. I have not yet tried it yet, but I think this is an economical approach to saving tons of money in the long run. At the start, it can be messy to open and getting the bottle after you charge it. But I am sure you will get used to it after some time.

  • I am not happy that I cannot refill the CO2 bottles myself unless I buy an expensive adapter. Some places also do not refill the canisters or have a long waiting list. Save yourself the hassle and check on these little details before you buy a machine. Otherwise, I really like my machine.
